Why I Wish I'd Started Building My Email List Sooner
If I could go back to the day I started affiliate marketing, there's one thing I would do differently.
I would start building an email list from day one.
When I first got into affiliate marketing, I thought the goal was to get as many people as possible to click my affiliate links.
Sometimes it worked.
I even made a few commissions promoting products from WarriorPlus and Digistore24.
Those first commissions were exciting because they proved that affiliate marketing really worked.
But there was a problem.
Every visitor who left my website was gone.
If they didn't buy the first time, I had no way of contacting them again.
I had to keep finding new visitors every single day.
It felt like I was starting from scratch over and over again.
That's when I realised I wasn't building a business.
I was simply chasing traffic.
Everything changed once I understood the value of an email list.
What Is an Email List?
An email list is simply a collection of people who have chosen to hear from you.
Instead of hoping they'll remember your website, you can stay in touch by sending helpful emails directly to their inbox.
Think about it this way.
Imagine someone visits your blog today.
They enjoy your article but they're not ready to buy anything.
Without an email list, they leave...
...and you may never see them again.
With an email list, they can subscribe, receive your free guide, and continue learning from you over the next few days or weeks.
That's how trust is built.
Why Email Marketing Still Works
People sometimes say email is old-fashioned.
I don't believe that's true.
In fact, I check my email every day.
Most people do.
Unlike social media, where your posts can disappear in a few hours, email allows you to have a more personal conversation with the people who have already shown an interest in what you share.
You don't have to compete with changing algorithms every time you send an email.
That's one of the reasons successful online businesses continue investing in email marketing.
My Biggest Mistake
For a long time, I didn't collect email addresses.
I focused on writing blog posts and promoting affiliate offers.
Looking back, I realise how many opportunities I missed.
People visited my blog.
Some clicked my links.
Most left.
And I had no way of helping them further.
When I finally decided to build my own email list, I discovered something unexpected.
Setting everything up wasn't as simple as I thought.
There were landing pages to build.
Emails to write.
Automation to learn.
At times I felt completely overwhelmed.
Thankfully, I didn't give up.
I learned one step at a time.
Today, I'm grateful I kept going because every subscriber represents someone who has trusted me enough to stay connected.
Step 1: Choose an Email Marketing Platform
There are many email marketing platforms available.
I chose Systeme.io because it allowed me to build landing pages, manage my email list, and create automated email campaigns in one place.
As a beginner, I liked having everything under one roof instead of using several different tools.
The important thing isn't choosing the "perfect" platform.
It's choosing one and learning how to use it.
Step 2: Create Something Worth Downloading
People are busy.
Most won't join an email list just because a website asks them to.
Give them a reason.
This is called a lead magnet.
Mine is a simple Affiliate Marketing Checklist.
It's not complicated.
It's simply a resource that helps beginners know what to do first.
Ask yourself:
"What would have helped me when I was starting?"
That's often the best lead magnet you can create.
Step 3: Build a Simple Landing Page
Your landing page has one job.
Explain what people will receive.
Keep it simple.
Use a clear headline.
Explain the benefit.
Ask only for the information you really need.
In most cases, a first name and email address are enough.
Step 4: Write a Welcome Email
This is one of the most important emails you'll ever send.
It's your first impression.
Instead of immediately trying to sell something, introduce yourself.
Deliver the free resource you promised.
Share a little of your story.
Let people know what they can expect from future emails.
That's how relationships begin.
Step 5: Keep Showing Up
This was another lesson I had to learn.
Building an email list isn't about collecting thousands of subscribers overnight.
It's about consistently helping the people who are already on your list.
One helpful email each week is far more valuable than sending nothing for months.
What Should You Email People About?
Many beginners worry they'll run out of things to say.
I used to think that too.
The truth is, every question you answer can become an email.
You can share:
- lessons you've learned
- mistakes you've made
- useful tools
- blog articles
- beginner tips
- success stories
- encouragement
Remember...
People subscribed because they wanted your help.
Keep helping them.
Is Building an Email List Difficult?
Honestly?
There were moments when I wondered if I'd ever get everything working.
I had to learn how landing pages worked.
I had to understand automations.
I made mistakes.
I changed things.
Sometimes I felt frustrated.
But every small problem I solved gave me more confidence.
Looking back, I'm glad I didn't quit.
If you're struggling today, remember that everyone starts somewhere.
My Advice to Beginners
Don't wait until your website is perfect.
Don't wait until you have hundreds of visitors.
Start building your email list now.
Even if only one person subscribes this week...
That's one more relationship you've started.
Every successful email list begins with the very first subscriber.
Final Thoughts
One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that visitors come and go...
Relationships last.
An email list allows you to continue helping people long after they've left your website.
For me, it changed the way I think about affiliate marketing.
I'm no longer trying to make a quick sale.
I'm trying to build trust.
Ironically, that's also the approach that gives you the best chance of building a successful online business.
